Learning a language is about words. Yes, that's true. You are supposed to absorb thousands of words, phrases and constructions. Learning a language is about words...but not only. It is about pictures, sounds, movements and ideas. It is a way of thinking and understanding. There are three types of learners: those focusing on the visual, those fond of the audible, and those keen on the kinesthetic.
How to learn a language if you are fond of the visual?
The visual is of course all about words and pictures, diagrams and charts, tables and thought maps. If the best way of learning for you is the visual one, your bedroom walls should be papered with various posters, diagrams and photos. Why don't you take a photo of a difficult English word, or if that's impossible, draw it! Make your own 'English creations,' draw pictures of things that you associate with certain English words. Make your bedroom remind you of thinking in English all the time.
How to learn a language if you are keen on the audible?
Those learners who are into the audible like listening to music, listening to conversations, sounds and even themselves! A good idea for such people would be to have BBC news, English songs or programmes turned on frequently, even while doing ordinary housework or cooking. You may not pay attention to the sounds, but still you would be subconsciously 'catching' them.
How to learn a language if you are into the kinesthetic?
If you can't stand the stillness and passivity, you will probable find it easier to learn languages through the movement. Try walking around the room, doing exercises or drawing something on a piece of paper while learning foreign words. Go jogging with your mp3 player and a language course recorded on it.
There are different ways of learning for different people. Do not rely on the book only! Explore the visions, the sounds and the movements of your favourite language:)
