In
a Total Physical Response Method speaking is a reaction to what we listen to. A
child repeats the words or phrases given and imitates the speech he/she hears.
In that way one learns pronunciation, intonationand an appropriate pace of a
given language. Besides, one automatically remembers the structures and phrases
that are suitable for a specific context and is able to use them later by just „feeling”
that they suit a certain situation.
Preparation
It
is worth preparing the list of thematic vocabulary before you start speaking.
You may divide your notebook into certain section with useful phrases and
structures. It is advisable to write down the words in collocations and phrases
rather than as single units. Sometimes it is also worth writing down even
simple words that can be used in an interesting or unusual context or phrase.
Sometimes one knows the word very well but doesn’t use it because of
unfrequency of its usage. After writing down the expressions, try to tell
something (using the very words you have just noted) even just to yourself (or
your reflection in the mirror) in order to use them in a pratcical way.
‘Feel the flow’
Any
time you read or listen to someone speaking English, you automatically acquire
the usage of words in context. Even if you don’t quite understand, you just
feel the flow of words and intuitively know what they mean. Later, you are more
likely to use the same expressions in your speaking. While speaking about the
similar context to that you had read about or listen about before, your brain
digs out the very structures you have already learnt and you speak using those
very structures.
Write before you
speak
Those
for whom spontaneous speaking is difficult should make notes before delivering
the speech. It is useful to write down some points or main ideas or create
several sentences. You may write a plan, brainstorm or compose a short text on
a given topic. After creating several plans or thematic text you will be so
exercised in collecting arguments and ideas that you will be able to deliver
more and more spontaneous speeches.
Find a Skype friend
Searching
for an English speaking friend is the best of all of the options. Talking with
a native speaker creates a perfect environment for developing your language
skills. Not only can you learn the proper pronounciation, but also you have the
chance to acquire vocabulary and slang used naturally and on everyday basis. Making friends with a native gives you just anotherbenefit. It enables you to speak naturally, with all the emotions, laughter and without paying attention to imperfections, which reduces stress and equips you with an ability to 'fly and think with the language'.
